Journalist's Espionage Trial in Russia Rescheduled to July 18

Gershkovich, First American Reporter to Face Espionage Charges in Post-Cold War Era

Moscow Court to Hold Second Hearing on Thursday

A Russian court has rescheduled the next hearing in the espionage trial of Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich to July 18. The trial, initially set for August, marks the first time an American journalist has been arrested on espionage charges in Russia since the Cold War.

Gershkovich, an American-born son of Soviet immigrants, has been jailed in Moscow's notorious Lefortovo Prison since his arrest in October 2021. He denies the charges, which carry a potential 20-year prison sentence.

The first hearing in Gershkovich's trial was held on Wednesday, during which his defense team argued for his release. The court is expected to address the defense motion during Thursday's hearing.
